So, you’ve done the research and gotten all your RFQ responses on a spreadsheet, great. You want to explore the option of inhouse encoding and printing, this can have huge benefits such as cheaper cost per tag and more importantly eliminating inventory of left over tags from customer dropped items. It does come with a whole new level of required knowledge about proper encoding formats / processes and equipment to correctly build and encode the data onto the tags, as well as print the human readable information needed. This can be a grueling task with many steps and requirements to be successful. If done properly, the payoff can be well worth the set up and investment made.

Some key things to address:

  • Select software that is compatible with your automated equipment print engine(s)

  • Identify the encoding is matching your inlay format

  • Assure the substrate of your label is compatible with the environment of your products at retail

  • Decide on printed information desired on your label and if thermal transfer is the best process for your application
